Patent Trial and Appeal Board Upholds Validity of Gunnar Energy Services' Core Magnetic Ranging Patent

Bakersfield, CA, December 26, 2025

The USPTO Patent Trial and Appeal Board denied Scientific Drilling's challenge to Gunnar's wired-pipe and coiled-tubing ranging-while-drilling patent (U.S. No. 12,110,780).

Gunnar Energy Services announced that the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) denied a challenge by Scientific Drilling Incorporated (SDI) to Gunnar's U.S. Patent No. 12,110,780. This patent covers systems and methods for ranging while drilling using wired pipe and coiled tubing.

The PTAB's decision in case PGR2025-00061, issued December 23, 2025, determined that SDI's petition failed to establish that any challenged claims were “more likely than not” unpatentable. The ruling reinforces the strength of Gunnar's innovation and provides assurance to customers and partners.

The patent validity supports Gunnar's position in advancing magnetic ranging solutions that improve drilling accuracy and operational insight. The company can continue investing in science-driven technologies designed to enhance environmental outcomes and operational safety in subsurface energy applications.

“We welcome the PTAB's decision and view it as validation of the technical rigor of our patented inventions. This ruling not only reinforces the strength of our intellectual property but also underscores our commitment to driving forward innovation in magnetic ranging for the benefit of our customers and the industry.”
