Greenfield SAGD Pass-By Ranging

Alberta, Canada  ·  2025

Gyro-referenced pass-by ranging on a greenfield SAGD pad, a first Canada deployment

The challenge
  • Confirm well trajectory and relative position on a greenfield SAGD pad.
  • The drilling well must pass an observation well at safe separation.
  • Survey uncertainty alone is insufficient for SAGD anti-collision assurance.
Our solution

Torped™ rotating-magnet ranging: gyro-referenced magnetic data captured from the observation well as the drilling BHA passed by, building a composite survey to resolve true relative position and run an anti-collision scan.

Strong signal, zero non-productive time, a first Canadian deployment
The result
±0.38 m
TVD (2σ), true position resolved at pass-by
  • ·Clean gyro-referenced data captured at ~12.3 m lateral separation
  • ·Anti-collision scan: closest approach ~13.1 m
  • ·Revealed the drilling well ~1.7 m lower in TVD than surveyed
  • ·All system components performed as expected, zero non-productive time
