Live CSG Well Lateral Intercept

Australia  ·  2026

Rotating-magnet ranging steers a lateral into a live CSG well through a 4 m coal window

The challenge
  • Intercept a live CSG well mid-seam, through a 4 m coal window in the target.
  • Sensor deployed on wireline through a 2⅞-in. surface stub (2.347 in. drift).
  • An obstruction held the sensor 13 m off bottom; the system had to account for the offset and range regardless.
Our solution

Torped™ rotating-magnet ranging: a 4.75-in. magnet sub in the drilling BHA with a 1.875-in. sensor hung in the target well. Gyro-referenced sensor-position engineering fixed the true target point, and eight ranging measurements steered the lateral onto the intercept. Hydraulic communication was confirmed by a pressure fluctuation on a surface quartz gauge.

Live CSG well intercepted mid-seam at the planned depth, within 6 in. of predicted intercept depth
The result
90 psi
surface gauge pressure response on intercept, live well
  • ·Target intercepted at 427.0 m, at an 88.2° crossing angle
  • ·Eight ranging measurements steered the approach onto a 4 m coal window
  • ·Live-well operation — barriers, pressure-control equipment and stop-drill comms managed throughout
  • ·Hydraulic communication confirmed on a surface quartz gauge, within 6 in. of predicted intercept depth
