Three CSG Lateral Intercepts, No Sidetracks

Queensland, Australia  ·  2026

Three CSG laterals intercept a single target well on the first hole, no sidetracks

The challenge
  • Three CSG laterals required precise intercepts of a single target well.
  • Survey lateral shifts of ~12.3–12.6 m were measured at the first two intercepts.
  • Each intercept had to land mid-seam and hold the coal through the connection.
Our solution

Torped™ rotating-magnet ranging with the sensor in the target well: shift-vector ranging resolved true relative position and steered each lateral onto the target. Learnings compounded run to run — later laterals were planned from the measured ranging shift, with geosteering holding the seam while ranging steered the turn.

3 of 3 intercepts confirmed · no sidetracks · ranging time cut from ~3 h to ~1 h
The result
3 of 3
laterals intercepted on the first hole, no sidetracks
  • ·All three laterals intercepted the target, confirmed at the target wellhead
  • ·Third lateral ranged from ~70 m and landed mid-seam
  • ·Second lateral closed 12.5 m to 0.03 m — ranging time cut from ~3 h to ~1 h
  • ·Later laterals planned from ranging-shifted surveys, on target from spud
