Offshore Orphan-Well Securing & P&A

Offshore Texas, USA  ·  2022

Emergency assessment and securing of leaking abandoned wells on a derelict offshore platform

The challenge
  • A derelict offshore platform had multiple wells leaking to the open Gulf.
  • Conductor / surface casing corroded and severed near the waterline; drivepipe missing.
  • Live shut-in pressures to ~2,100 psi with degraded, partly inoperable tree valves.
Our solution

Gunnar led a boat- and drone-based assessment alongside the state regulator, then mobilized a liftboat intervention with pressure-control partners. Slickline operations equalized and bled trapped pressure, restored tree-valve function, and tagged and cleared a downhole obstruction; a staged balanced-cement-plug procedure was engineered for permanent P&A.

The result
2 wells
secured, leaking orphan wells on a derelict platform
  • ·Boat- and drone-based assessment of the abandoned platform
  • ·Found multiple wells flowing, casing corroded/severed near the waterline
  • ·Slickline intervention equalized & bled trapped pressure (to ~2,100 psi)
  • ·Engineered a staged balanced-cement-plug procedure for permanent P&A
