Intercept, Mill & Re-Enter for P&A

Western Australia  ·  2024

Intercept, mill and re-enter to permanently abandon a well where a concentric P&A attempt failed

The challenge
  • A prior concentric (through-tubing) P&A attempt could not set a reliable barrier.
  • A permanent barrier was required below the production packer (~1,970 m).
  • High-angle mill & re-enter into the target casing.
Our solution

Drilled the intercept well with GWD and passive magnetic ranging while drilling, backed by active wireline AMR. Target-well surveys proved accurate, so the team aimed deeper between runs, located the target, milled a window and re-entered for permanent abandonment.

Target located and re-entered, permanent barrier set below the packer
The result
~1,970 m
target MD, barrier intercept set below the packer
  • ·Reviewed the failed concentric P&A and planned a precise intercept
  • ·Accurate target-well surveys, fewer AMR runs required
  • ·Located the target, milled a window and re-entered at high angle
  • ·Permanent barrier set below the packer
