High-Angle Intercept, Mill & Re-Enter for P&A

Western Australia  ·  2025

Intercept, mill and re-enter to permanently abandon a legacy well where concentric P&A failed

The challenge
  • Through-tubing (concentric) P&A could not set a reliable barrier.
  • A permanent barrier was required below the production packer, deep in the reservoir.
  • Drill an intercept well, locate the target, mill a window and re-enter at high angle.
Our solution

Designed and drilled the intercept well: GWD with passive magnetic ranging while drilling, then active wireline AMR (with AMR-while-drilling) to home in. Located the target, drilled down 30+ m of the target casing, milled a window and re-entered to set a permanent barrier, delivered via Gunnar's Australian entity.

Completed in ~half the forecast time, single intercept above the packer
The result
~50%
time saved vs. forecast
  • ·Single intercept above the packer; 30+ m of casing milled and perforated
  • ·Gen-2 tools + GWD withstood drilling down casing, no failures reported
  • ·Passive-while-drilling + wireline AMR + AMR-while-drilling reduced trips and HSE risk
  • ·Overcame the barrier limitation of the earlier concentric P&A attempt
