4:14 The challenge
- →A target well had casing parted at ~651 ft, concentric re-entry by milling failed.
- →Permanent P&A required deep cement plugs that could not be accessed.
- →A sidetrack had to be steered to physically intercept the target at depth.
Our solution
Active gradient ranging with the 1.85" DeadSet™ tool, run on wireline through open-ended drill pipe, gave continuous north-referenced direction and center-to-center distance to the target. Across three ranging runs Gunnar steered the sidetrack onto the target so it could be milled into, establishing hydraulic communication for the deep abandonment plugs.
Sidetrack steered to direct contact, target milled and abandoned
The result
0.5 ft
center-to-center, closed to direct contact at ~802 ft MD
- ·First run: target at ~1.5 ft, parted casing weakened the signal
- ·Second run: closed to ~0.5 ft; sensor in direct physical contact at ~802 ft MD
- ·Third run: confirmed ~1.1 ft at the deep plug depth
- ·Enabled milling into the target and deep cement plugs for permanent P&A
